Summer BBQ

This was a personal piece for my portfolio created with stylist Flossy McAslan, and driven by a wish to capture the energy of a summer barbecue: drinks in hand, prawns and corn over the coals, watermelon, the beautiful chaos of an afternoon with friends.

The weather, however, refused to cooperate. It poured, then the sun broke in and out every few seconds, so the light was a constantly shifting variable and we were forced to work at speed. That urgency, though, fed directly into the pictures and gave them a vitality that cannot be manufactured. I played with perspective on viewpoint, shooting from unusual positions and moving in close, creating shifting angles that place the viewer inside the scene.
